Commercial Kitchen Equipment Certifications Explained: NSF, ETL, CE, UL
Certification is one part of compliance; the exact model, installation and local acceptance also matter. This guide explains NSF, ETL, CE and UL and how to identify the evidence required for your equipment and destination.
Why Certifications Matter

Applicable standards and accepted certification routes depend on the model and authority. Check sanitation, electrical or gas safety, food-contact suitability and efficiency separately. Intertek’s ETL Sanitation mark covers relevant NSF/ANSI sanitation standards; an electrical ETL listing alone does not establish sanitation compliance.
The Major Certifications
NSF
NSF certification assesses the listed food-equipment model against the applicable sanitation standard, including relevant material, design and cleanability requirements. Verify the current model listing and its scope. Certification does not replace proper installation, cleaning or local acceptance.
ETL
ETL Listed and UL safety certifications are issued by different organizations. Compare the exact model, standard, certification scope and local acceptance rather than treating all marks as interchangeable. An electrical listing does not establish food-equipment sanitation compliance.
UL
ETL Listed and UL safety certifications are issued by different organizations. Compare the exact model, standard, certification scope and local acceptance rather than treating all marks as interchangeable. An electrical listing does not establish food-equipment sanitation compliance.
CE
For EU supply, determine which legislation applies to the exact equipment. CE marking is required only for products covered by the applicable CE legislation; food-contact compliance is a separate consideration. RoHS applies to electrical and electronic equipment within its scope, subject to exclusions and exemptions.
RoHS
For EU supply, determine which legislation applies to the exact equipment. CE marking is required only for products covered by the applicable CE legislation; food-contact compliance is a separate consideration. RoHS applies to electrical and electronic equipment within its scope, subject to exclusions and exemptions.
Which Certifications Do You Need?
The certifications you need depend on your location and equipment type:
- North America: verify sanitation requirements with the local authority and the exact listing. NSF certification or another accepted accredited sanitation route may apply.
- EU: identify the legislation applicable to the exact model and request the EU Declaration of Conformity where required.
- Australia and New Zealand: determine electrical safety and EMC obligations, scope and local responsible supplier requirements. SAA is one certification provider; its name is not a universal mandatory mark.
NSF vs ETL: What’s the Difference?
Applicable standards and accepted certification routes depend on the model and authority. Check sanitation, electrical or gas safety, food-contact suitability and efficiency separately. Intertek’s ETL Sanitation mark covers relevant NSF/ANSI sanitation standards; an electrical ETL listing alone does not establish sanitation compliance. NSF vs ETL certification.
How to Verify Certifications
Check the NSF certificate and investigate potentially false test reports. Verify the current model and scope directly with the issuer.
Does Your State Require NSF?
US state and local requirements vary by equipment and adopted code. Confirm with the health authority which sanitation standard and accredited certification routes it accepts for the exact model; do not assume that only an NSF-issued certificate is acceptable.
Zibo Cook’s Certifications
For the exact model and destination, request the applicable EU Declaration of Conformity and supporting documents. CE marking is the manufacturer’s conformity declaration under applicable legislation, not a general third-party safety approval. For an NSF-listed item supplied through a partner factory, verify the model, listing holder and producing facility before ordering. Confirm the MOQ, sample schedule, production schedule and any DDP scope in the current written quotation. Zibo Cook commercial refrigerators freezers

Scope and verification
Regulatory examples apply to the named market. Confirm the locally adopted requirements and acceptance with the authority and a qualified designer. Translation does not make US, EU or other requirements universal. The FDA Food Code is a model for local adoption, not a single worldwide law.
